After mutual military attacks, Iran and Pakistan want to resume diplomatic relations. The ambassadors should return by January 26th, according to a press release from the Pakistani Foreign Ministry and a report from the Iranian news agency Tasnim on Monday. Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amirabdollahian is also scheduled to visit Pakistan on January 29, it said.
Pakistan withdrew its ambassador from Tehran following an Iranian missile attack on extremists in its territory last week. The Foreign Ministry in Islamabad had also announced that Iran’s ambassador would not be allowed to return to Pakistan until further notice. On Friday, however, both sides struck a more conciliatory tone and declared their willingness to improve cooperation.
Last Tuesday, Iran said it attacked a militia on Pakistani territory that is also said to have ties to Israel. In response, Pakistan shelled Baloch separatist positions in Iran on Thursday. According to both countries, several people died in the attacks. The border areas on both sides are characterized by ethnic unrest, but they are also rich in natural resources. The relationship between Iran, which sees itself as the protective power of the Shiite faith of Islam, and the predominantly Sunni Pakistan has been difficult for years.
