A little more than 24 hours following being named head coach of the New York Islanders, Patrick Roy made his debut behind the bench in a game once morest the Dallas Stars on Sunday night.
The Islanders currently lead 1-0 following one period.
From the start of the match, Roy was very active behind the bench. He was seen constantly in conversation with his players. Our colleague Patrick Friolet, who is at the match in New York, said that Roy can be heard giving encouragement “from the top of the press gallery”.
Patrick Roy is not the type of coach who will sit idly by during the match.
Very active and engaged behind the bench. He talks constantly and gives a lot of feedback to his players. And several encouragements. We can hear it from the top of the press gallery!

Roy waited less than three minutes before seeing his team register. It was former Montreal Canadiens Alexander Romanov who took advantage of a three-on-two descent. The defender accepted a pass from Mathew Barzal before firing a good shot from the right circle.
The Stars tied the game midway through Jason Robertson. The forward slipped the puck between his legs before beating Ilya Sorokin with a quick feint. Hudson Fasching had missed a golden chance to double the Islanders’ lead moments earlier.
Roy is in charge of an NHL team for the first time since the 2015-2016 season, when he led the Colorado Avalanche.
According to our colleague Patrick Friolet, the new head coach makes no changes to his training compared to the Islanders’ last game, a 4-3 overtime defeat once morest the Blackhawks on Friday.
The Islanders have lost four straight and six of their last seven games. The team is not in position to make the playoffs at this time.
The famous goaltender retired from playing in 2003. Two years later, he would lead the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL. He won the Memorial Cup with them through his two stints at the helm of the organization, interspersed with a stint in the NHL as coach.
A Hall of Fame inductee, Roy led the Avalanche to just one playoff appearance, in 2014, and his team was eliminated in the first round.
The Islanders lineup:
Lee-Horvat-Barzal (27-14-13)
Carnival-Nelson-Palmieri (20-29-21)
Holmstrom-Pageau-Gauthier (10-44-16)
Martin-MacLean-Clutterbuck (17-32-15)
Romanov-Dobson (28-8)
Pelech-Aho (3-25)
