Measles Outbreak Updates: United Kingdom, Malaysia, Canada, United States, and Argentine

United Kingdom

Au United Kingdoml’British health safety agency confirmed that as of January 18, 216 confirmed cases and 103 probable cases of measles were recorded in the West Midlands since October 1, 2023. Approximately 80% of cases were observed Birminghamand regarding 10% to Coventrythe majority of them involving children under the age of 10.

UKHSA health professionals fear the number of cases will rise rapidly as children return to school, especially as the administration of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine is “worrying” in parts of the West Midlands. Malaysia

People who have symptoms and were in any of the locations listed at the times listed should wear a mask and call 811 for directions. Anyone potentially exposed to the RUH Hospital emergency room may also benefit from preventive treatment, according to the SHA, if they were born in 1964 or later and have not received two doses of measles vaccine.

UNITED STATES

The public health department of Georgia (DPH) has confirmed a case of measles in an unvaccinated resident of the metropolitan area ofAtlanta. This person was exposed to measles while traveling abroad (the country was not specified). DPH is working to identify anyone who may have come into contact with this person while they were contagious.

The last reported case of measles in Georgia was in 2020.

Argentine

In Argentineaccording to the Agency Telam, the national reference laboratory confirmed on January 19, 2024 a case of measles in an unvaccinated 19-month-old child who had never traveled.
