The Bus Rapid Transit project, carried out by the Chinese company China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), will reduce the travel time from Guédiawaye to the center of Dakar by two, from 90 to 45 minutes

The Senegalese president Macky Sall inaugurated on January 14 in the region of Dakar, a 100% electric bus network intended to transform mobility in the congested metropolis. The project was launched on December 27, 2023 by the Prime Minister, Amadou Ba.

The BRT, project initially costed at 300 billion CFA francs (457 million euros) and financially supported by the World Bank, the European Investment Bank and the UN Green Climate Fund, must transport 300,000 passengers per day between Guédiawaye and the center of the capital, on 18 km of roads and a route traveled daily by a multitude of Senegalese.

The Dakar BRT project, with a total length of 18.3 kilometers with 23 stations including 3 interchange hubs, was carried out by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

The project’s 158 buses will serve some of the most densely populated and congested areas of the conurbation and travel time from Guédiawaye to central Dakar is expected to be halved, from 90 to 45 minutes.

The Dakar region concentrates a quarter of the national population, with almost 4 million inhabitants today and 5 million anticipated by 2030, but also most of the economic activity and 70% of registered vehicles, indicates the Dakar Urban Transport Executive Council (Cetus), transport organizing authority for Greater Dakar.

The population is increasing at an annual rate of nearly 3% and the automobile fleet by 10%. The volume of travel should have doubled in twenty years, says Cetud.

The project created 1,500 jobs during its construction and will directly create more than 1,000 jobs following the BRT comes into operation, Huang Fei, project manager of CRBC, was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
