What belonged together came together: In the spring of 2023, musicians from such illustrious psych formations as Speck, Zone Six, Kombynat Robotron and Sula Bassana met in the Buffbergen Studios in Hanover for a joint session that yielded countless hours of music. Only the beginnings and ends were slightly edited, the rest was completely created in the moment. We call ourselves together Minerall and presented with “Iron” the first result of the creative journey together.
Two tracks, each over 20 minutes, make up this debut. “Ironing/Unexplored” first feels its way through psych and space effects, while drums and bass carefully find their way into the song. The driving build-up with a comparatively loosely played guitar works well, the first effects intensify the pleasantly unreal impression and blur the action in a wondrous way. At the halfway point, the track sags and loses itself in a microcosm of minimalism, broken down to the essentials and even hypnotizing in its simple presentation.
“Sachebene”, the B-side, also avoids going all out straight away. Instead, the trio puts the cart before the proverbial horse and approaches the action very carefully. This delicate, yet determined rebellion, surrounded by numerous effect pedals, also knows how to entertain. The track first has to grow and flourish, Minerall skillfully exploit the abandoned idea and work towards an explosive climax. It’s not completely steep, but small tightening and muscle flexing ensure that this gem remains in your memory.
That constant play with contrasts, even in superficially hesitant moments, is damn good. What initially appears static ultimately shows a band that is constantly in motion, that neither can nor wants to let up, that comes out of itself with growing enthusiasm and yet knows how to exploit the magic of the moment like no other. As soon as “Bügeln” starts, you lose yourself in space, psych, Kraut and other instrumental worlds of wonder, carried by a wave of nuances, as delicate as they are dynamic. Minerall debut as a new top trio and demand – and deserve – full attention.
