Thirteen people died Friday evening following a fire in a school dormitory in Fangcheng district, Nanyang, in central China’s Henan province, local authorities announced Saturday morning.

At 11 p.m. Friday, the local fire department received an alert regarding a fire in the dormitory of Yingcai School in Yanshanpu Village, Dushu Township. Rescuers quickly arrived on the scene and extinguished the flames at 11:38 p.m.

The dormitory housed around thirty boarding students when the fire broke out. With the exception of the 14 injured, the others were evacuated safely.

The injured people are currently hospitalized. They are in stable condition.

Yingcai School is a private school that has existed for more than 10 years. It mainly welcomes students from neighboring rural areas, including some children who have been left behind.

According to a mother of a student at the school, following the incident, her child was taken home by village officials around 6 a.m. on Saturday, and the date of return to school remains unknown.

She said the schoolgirls slept on the second floor of the dormitory, and the schoolboys on the third floor.

The school has an affiliated kindergarten. Before the fire, the kindergarten children had already gone home for the weekend.

An investigation into the fire was opened by local authorities, and the school official was subdued by police.
