More than two decades following the September 11, 2001 attacks, a new victim has been identified using new DNA sequencing technology.

Authorities were able to determine that the 1,650th victim of the attacks is John Ballantine Niven, a 44-year-old man from Oyster Bay, New York, USA TODAY reports.

He was the vice president of the insurance firm Aon Risk Services, whose offices were located on the 105th floor of the second tower of the World Trade Center, reports the New York Times.

“Although the pain of the immense losses of September 11 is still present, the possibility of new identifications can offer comfort to the families of the victims,” says New York Mayor Eric Adams.

Around 40% of the nearly 3,000 victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks have still not been identified.

DNA tests are still underway to try to determine the identity of these victims.

New sequencing technology has allowed authorities to achieve concrete results in recent years, following numerous failed attempts.

These efforts continue in the case of the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, but also in the case of more than 20,000 other people who died in the United States and who have still not been identified.
