(CNN) Former world pole vault champion Sean Barber of Canada has died at the age of 29. A representative revealed this to CNN on the 18th.

Barber set the Canadian record for men’s pole vault in January 2016. In 2015, he won a gold medal at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada. In the same year he also won the World Championships held in the capital of China, Beijing.

Barber passed away from complications at his home in Kingwood, Texas, on the 17th, according to a statement from the University of Akron’s athletics department.

During her college days, Barber was a member of the track and field team at the University of Akron, where she was a three-time national collegiate champion.

In a statement, the University of Akron reflected on Barber’s character, saying he was “much loved as both a teammate and an athlete.”

Barber made her Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. She made it to the finals. The winner was Thiago Blas from Brazil.

Barber’s personal best was 6 meters, which still stands as a Canadian record.
