Dutchman fell while urinating next to the A9 and died

The driver (77) of a larger car with a trailer apparently wanted to relieve himself following an accident and climbed over the side rail and a railing. He slipped. His passenger wanted to hold him, but was unable to save him. The Gleinalm tunnel in the direction of Graz was closed for around three hours due to the rescue.

The 77-year-old was driving his car and trailer on the A9 from the north towards Graz around 7 p.m., as the state police headquarters announced on Thursday. Around 1.5 kilometers following exiting the south portal of the Gleinalm tunnel, the trailer skidded due to a technical problem and touched the guardrail there. The driver immediately stopped on the hard shoulder of a motorway bridge and got out with his 58-year-old passenger to assess the damage. When the passenger called the police by phone, the driver climbed over the guardrail and a railing to urinate. He may have slipped, but was able to briefly hold on to a crossbar on the railing.

His passenger tried to pull him up, but was unable to prevent him from slipping further. The 77-year-old subsequently fell around 25 meters. The rescue workers were only able to rescue the man dead. The passenger had to be looked following by a crisis intervention team. The car and trailer were no longer drivable and had to be towed away.
