At first it was “just” a mysterious lung disease. But it quickly became clear: Like no other virus, Sars-CoV-2 can damage a wide variety of organs in the body when infected: blood vessels, muscles, the intestinal flora, the immune system, the brain and the autonomic nervous system, the kidneys and many more. Such multi-organ damage is possible following any Sars-CoV-2 infection, but it primarily affects the at least 65 million people worldwide who suffer from Long Covid – i.e. from long-lasting symptoms that affect the quality of life of those affected even several years following the infection sometimes have a massive impact.
