In 2022, David Leitch, ex-stuntman and Brad Pitt’s understudy, directs the Hollywood star actor in “Bullet Train”. An explosive and uninhibited action comedy that earned a nice place in the Prime Video Top 10.

A train full of assassins

In 2014, David Leitch began directing with his partner Chad Stahelski and they directed four hands John Wick. The beginning of success for the two first-time directors, who began their Hollywood careers together as stuntmen, but a success that everyone will then continue on their own. For Chad Stahelski it will be directing the John Wick films, and for David Leitch a variety of action films, with Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2le spin-off de la saga Fast and Furious Hobbs & Shaw et Bullet Trainreleased in 2022.

In Bullet Trainadaptation of the Japanese novel Maria Beetle by Kōtarō Isaka, David Leitch brings together a very nice cast to tell the crazy adventures of several assassins boarding the same train. Not everyone is there for the same reason, but their stories will end up intersecting in a jubilant killing game where black humor is one of the main weapons.

We mainly follow “Ladybug”, a friendly but tired assassin who is thinking of retiring, played by Brad Pitt. In front of him are the hitmen British and twin brothers Tangerine (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Lemon (Brian Tyree Henry), a killer specialized in poisons (Zazie Beetz), a kingpin of the Russian underworld (Michael Shannon), and other characters all as mysterious as dangerous…

Brad Pitt as the king of action comedy

Bullet Train is like the train of its history, launched at full speed on rails full of references and diverse inspirations. We think of Quentin Tarantino for the long, offbeat dialogues and the killer characters. Kill Billto Guy Ritchie’s first films for their “light” ultra-violence, to the very colorful images that might come out of a Robert Rodriguez film…

Bullet Train is rich in its proposal, very rich, and if it uses too many pop-culture references and ultimately drowns its identity in them, it can count on a performance inspired by Brad Pitt to keep its power of entertainment intact. Indeed, the actor is in very good shape there, both at the time of distribute blows to these enemies than to play on his tireless charm and use his phlegmatic repartee.

David Leitch knows Brad Pitt well having been his stunt double five times (Fight Club, Spy Game, Ocean’s Eleven, Troy, Mr. & Mrs. Smith). A closeness that we feel in Bullet Train, as the film seems essentially built around him, sometimes to the detriment of certain interesting ideas. But the superstar actor is so comfortable and attractive in this violent and explosive action comedy – rated R upon release in the United States – that we forgive Bullet Train his laziness.
