The uniforms will be introduced on board and at the airport from March 1 and will be worn by more than 2,600 staff members. Visually, they are dark navy blue with champagne-colored details and are inspired by the glamorous airlines of the 60s, explains Brussels Airlines.
Among the outfits presented, we find one with a rolled code and the other a trapeze dress. Unisex pieces have also been introduced, as well as sneakers for staff members who wish them. The materials used are durable and, for some, innovative, for example grape or cactus leather.
Among the designers is Gabrielle Szwarcenberg, a young designer from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. She particularly insisted on the “Belgitude” of the outfits, with subtle references to Belgian icons, such as the Atomium on the scarves and on the inner lining of the blazers.
The design process took two years in total and the uniform was created in close collaboration with frontline workers, who were able to choose the final look from several designs.
Old uniforms will be collected and recycled and will be given a second life.
Brussels Airlines has also updated the instructions accompanying the uniform, which are intended to be more inclusive. Hair, makeup and jewelry guidelines will no longer be different for men and women. Makeup has also become optional for everyone and is therefore no longer compulsory for women.
There will also be no difference between genders when it comes to hairstyle: as soon as the hair touches the shoulders, it must be tied back or worn in a bun, which is a safety precaution.
Finally, tattoos can now be shown as long as certain rules are followed, such as position, size and what they represent.
