Suicides of two employees of the Banque de France: what the conclusions of the internal investigation reveal

Is the Banque de France responsible for the suicide of two of its employees last June? This Thursday, the institution presented to employees and unions the results of an internal investigation carried out following these tragedies.

The governor of the central bank, François Villeroy de Galhau, declared “to take seriously the results and suggestions” of the investigation, and “to draw the consequences in action”, in introduction of an extraordinary CSE on the subject.

The institution surveyed its agents at the end of last year and held nearly 400 meetings on the subject. A majority of respondents rate their job satisfaction as good or very good, the usefulness of their mission, the atmosphere and even the relationship with their colleagues and superiors.

Workload too heavy

The situation is reversed, however, for workload. More than half of the agents questioned consider their workload to be heavy or too heavy, whether in the network or in central services. “The conclusions show that the policy of drastic reduction in workforce (-25% since 2015) has worsened the workload and mental load of employees, the consequences of which on health are regularly highlighted,” the unions reacted in a press release common.

The Banque de France also presented some concrete improvements in terms of workload: facilitation of certain administrative tasks, budget of 50 euros per employee – at the hands of managers – to “organize conviviality events”, increase in the envelope variable remuneration…

The Banque de France insists on stabilizing the workforce following the end of 2025. “New hires are the only solution, since the measures to adapt the workload have failed,” responded the unions.

Two suicides of employees working within the fiduciary sector (which issues and collects notes and coins) of the Banque de France last year fueled the concern of employees and unions within the institution. The suicides took place in June at the people’s homes. One of the employees who took his own life pointed out the working conditions in a letter to explain his action.

Management announced in the fall the launch of an internal study. The unions initiated another, carried out in parallel by the external firm Technologia. Its results will be known by the end of February.
