The weather conditions put Valais winegrowers under pressure in 2023. Through hard work, they nevertheless obtained quality harvests which resulted in a “pleasant” and “quality” vintage, the Vine Office announced on Thursday. and wine.
With 45.7 million kilos of grapes cellared, the harvest is similar to those of 2019 and 2022, continues the Canton in a press release. Made up of some 26 million kilos of red grapes and 20 million kilos of white grapes, it displays a volume 10% higher than the ten-year average.
The vintage is described as a “winemaker’s vintage”. This means that its quality is particularly linked to the know-how of the winegrowers who were able to obtain a beautiful product despite the climatic conditions.
The weather was indeed capricious, with a very humid spring followed by a very contrasting summer. Heatwave episodes stressed the vines in places and slowed down the development and ripening of the grapes.
The hailstorm which hit the canton on July 24 caused damage to fruit and vegetable crops but also to certain vineyards. As for the fungal diseases downy mildew and powdery mildew, they “were well controlled by the winegrowers and did not cause any damage”, notes the vine and wine office.
