BERLIN – A 2022 survey at the height of the Covid crisis found that people in most European countries were satisfied with their lives. Austria came first, followed by Germany and Bulgaria. Austrians are the happiest people in the EU.
This is stated in a newly published report by the EU statistics agency Eurostat. On a scale of one to 10, Austrians rated their overall life satisfaction at 7.9. Despite the crisis in recent years, the European Union survey revealed high levels of overall satisfaction.
Austrians declared themselves particularly satisfied with their personal relationships. They reported an average satisfaction score of 8.6. In addition to Austria, non-EU country Switzerland stood out in recently published findings. Although not a member of the EU, Switzerland, frequently included in Eurostat studies due to its close economic ties and geographical proximity to the union, beat the entire EU with a satisfaction score of 8.0.
Eurostat also found that in most countries, young people are more satisfied than older people. The opposite is true only in Scandinavia, Ireland, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Germany has fallen far down the rankings. In 2018, Germany scored only 0.6 points lower than Austria, which scored 6.5 points in 2012.
