Universidad de Chile found its seventh reinforcement for the 2024 season. After intense negotiations and having left the negotiation in suspense, Matías Sepúlveda signed a contract with the blues and will join the team led by Gustavo Álvarez in the coming days. He arrives free and will eventually have a long stay at the club.

According to information collected by En Cancha, the pact between the University of Chile and Matías Sepúlveda is closed. The 24-year-old midfielder sealed a two-year bond with the blue institution following leaving Audax Italiano, a club with which he decided not to renew his bond. In turn, he will have the possibility of extending said contract for one more season.

He will cover an area in which Gustavo Álvarez had already assured that he needed one more player and in which César Pérez was also being sought. On paper, the arrival of the left-hander cools the situation with the national team belonging to Unión La Calera, whose first intention is to leave for European football following the U-23 Olympic Qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Matías Sepúlveda arrives following various attempts by the University of Chile to sign him. In mid-2023 they also tried to sign him due to the good play shown in Audax Italiano, but on that occasion the blues were competing with Brazilian football. None of the alternatives materialized and remained on the synthetic grass of La Florida.

During the last season, the left-hander trained in O’Higgins (a club where he scored two goals once morest the University of Chile) played 39 games, including nine in the Copa Sudamericana. He will arrive at a midfield in which he will receive an induction from an old acquaintance: Marcelo Díaz will teach him what it means to wear the U on his chest.

The next step of the U

Although new signings at the University of Chile are not ruled out, for now the outlook is calmer. Gustavo Álvarez’s coaching staff will continue analyzing the midfield and rearguard, the latter being the one that becomes a priority following the hiring of Matías Sepúlveda. For now, only a home-trained one appears on the radar.

Nicolás Ramírez is not ruled out despite the defender’s intention to continue his career in the MLS. The defender rejected Universidad de Chile on two occasions, just as he did with Huachipato, his last club. Those from Talcahuano tried to renew him and the response was the same on repeated occasions: he wants to play in North American soccer.

While waiting for the arrival of Matías Sepúlveda, the University of Chile continues to work on the transfer market, although the next objective is Unión Española. This match between blues and Hispanics, which will mean the debut of both in 2024, will be played this Saturday, January 20, from 8:00 p.m., at the Santa Laura Stadium.

The complex drama of a player who left the U: he returned to his club and will not be considered

After a semester at the University of Chile, left back Vicente Fernández returned to Talleres. In the Córdoba team there is a difficult outlook for foreign footballers.
