The Cowboys Fringants considered using artificial intelligence on certain songs from their new album that Karl Tremblay did not have time to record before his death. “But we decided not to go there, that would be going too far” confided Jean-François Pauzé in a new episode of the podcast Jean-Karl’s shack.

It will not be until March that the highly anticipated new Cowboys Fringants album will be released, the songwriter announced. In discussion with two long-time friends of Karl, computer scientist Marc Desjardins and lighting designer Jean-François “Titi” Tancrède, Pauzé mentioned in the podcast that the group still had studio sessions scheduled, the 3 and February 4.
“After that, it will be a question of mix. Our director, Gus Van Go, is very busy. I don’t know when he’ll find the time to mix this. We’re going to try to get this out by the end of winter or the beginning of spring.”

Striking technology
Jean-François Pauzé indicated that the album would include 12 songs, including two or three instrumental tracks. “It makes the album hold up well.” Of the lot, there will be five or six songs that had been written for the musical Pub Royal.
“Karl had time to record them almost completely, except for two that I had to do,” mentioned the guitarist. Married [Annick Lépine] also composed a song. I did one as a duet with Marie and I also sang one alone because Karl didn’t have time…”
Unusually, Jean-François Pauzé says that for fun in the studio, he sang a piece, and with an artificial intelligence program, they changed his voice to that of Karl. “It was still a startling screech! he said. But we said to ourselves that it was touchy (delicate). It was still my voice that became Karl’s. It was beautiful at the same time. And Karl loved technology. But we decided not to go there [en l’utilisant pour l’album]that would be going too far.”
Very touching song
The disc will contain the poignant song Let fine you showwhich Pauzé wrote for Pub Royal and which has several similarities with what Karl experienced in his last months. On the podcast Jean-Karl’s shack, the lyricist said he didn’t know how to get Karl to listen to the song following writing it. It was ultimately Marie-Annick who took care of it. Karl not only liked the song, but also agreed to sing it for the album.
“I never spoke [de cette chanson] with Karl before the day he recorded it, said Jean-François […] It is very beautiful. He made it a little different [de la version dans Pub Royal]. She is calmer. He was in a mood of a guy at the end of his life when he recorded it. It’s very touching. There’s a little fragility in his voice.”
Elsewhere in this episode, which is only available to paying subscribers on the Patreon platform, Jean-François Pauzé said that Karl Tremblay had always kept hope that he would get through it, despite the illness. “The shows in Europe that we had to postpone maybe 10 times, he never wanted us to cancel them. I think he wanted to keep a goal, a target, at all times. I think he himself believed in it until the end.”
