Much has been written regarding the Nürburgring-Nordschleife over the years since it was first raced. The legendary 20.83 kilometer circuit meanders through the Eifel forest in Germany and has regularly bitten amateurs and professionals alike, who have tried to tame it, striving for that extra tenth of a second.
Bergwerk, Fuchsröhre, Schwedenkreuz and Flugplatz are just some of the more than 150 corners that drivers face as they leave the starting gate, with an exclusive club waiting for a select few.
The first of the so-called “holy trinity”, the McLaren P1, has several impressive accolades to its name. Underscoring the sheer performance and capability of the limited-edition hypercar, “Mr McLaren” Ron Dennis announced at its launch in 2013 that entry into the sub-7-minute car club was a prerequisite for approving the car’s performance. ; Designed to be “the fastest car on the road and on the track.”
Bold words, especially in the face of the tough competition from the Maranello and Stuttgart era. However, just 10 months later, McLaren confirmed that his accession attempt had been a success. The car that reached the milestone was one of the company’s prototypes, the P1-‘XP2R’, and the achievement was simply one part of the performance benchmarking.
No further details were confirmed, other than to acknowledge that the task, along with all other performance objectives of the development programme, had been completed. And then the Internet forums exploded.
Now, a decade following McLaren Automotive’s announcement, the era-defining prototype, the XP2R, has emerged from under the covers of a private collection, entrusted to the Sub7 Collection team.
Named following the automotive industry’s most prestigious club, Sub7 Collection manages and sources some of the world’s most exclusive automobiles on behalf of clients.
Through the dedicated management of private vehicle collections, through to sourcing and step-by-step support for sales or purchases of high-value premium super and hypercars, Sub7 Collection will work with clients looking to acquire individual vehicles, through to the creation and maintaining custom collections. .
The Sub7 Collection is headed by Jamie Weir who, amongst his extensive experience in the prestigious and exclusive automotive markets, played an important role in customer management of the McLaren P1 program during his time with the brand.
As the perfect model for the launch of the Sub7 Collection, the McLaren P1 was one of the founding fathers of the exclusive sub-7 minute members club. Widely regarded as the pinnacle of modern McLaren Automotive projects, the model was limited to just 375 production models, supported by a small number of testing and validation prototypes.
After this production was completed, selected customers were offered the opportunity to purchase a very small number of special vehicles that had played an important role in the development process.
XP2R, or eXperimental Prototype 2 as it began, was one of the first development mules in the innovative project. Initially running in track camouflage prior to public unveiling, the XP2R underwent extensive testing including vMax attempts, tire testing with Pirelli, braking system approval with Akebono, active aerodynamics, Race mode and shock tuning .
It received its fully painted body in June 2013, as the program became more public, appearing once once more at the Nürburgring as it worked through the final stages of the development program, aiming for the lap time.
As genuine racing cars have become more attractive in recent years, particularly when they offer genuine racing provenance, XP2R stands as one of the most unique and talked regarding stories of a specific road car in recent years. .
Completely recommissioned at the end of its “life” by McLaren Automotive, it is exactly as it completed its demanding development program (finished in a stunning Supernova Silver metal body, with stealth wheels) and still bears its “prototype vehicle” monikers. ”. The XP2R now ships with an extensive set of spare parts, including a second set of carbon fiber bodywork.
With these spare parts and bodywork, a complete silhouette vehicle has been created, which together with the vehicle is part of the owner’s private collection.
This second model is virtually identical to the original prototype, although it displays the different colored brake calipers that were used during the development program.
So what does it take to achieve under-7 status? The unique challenge of the Nordschleife, or “North Loop,” means the car must travel at an average speed of over 111 mph.
Average. No mean feat, especially when you remember that some of the tighter, twistier corners drop speeds into double digits, seriously affecting the average. Completing the task requires maximum commitment and trust in the car from the driver throughout the entire lap.
Commitment and trust is exactly what Sub7 Collection will now provide customers as they look to acquire, sell and maintain some of the most exclusive, exotic and valuable vehicles in the world.
