Apple has devised a new interface for its operating system, which has the ability to identify when the smartphone has been submerged to adjust and simplify its appearance, in order to improve its use under water or other liquid.
The latest smartphones that the brand has launched, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, have IP68 certification, according to the IEC 60529 standard, which means that they can remain submerged for a maximum of 30 minutes and up to six meters deep.
The company believes that more and more electronic equipment is being manufactured to be waterproof, which is why “some users engage in water activities and cause their electronic devices to come into contact with water and other liquids.”
In this sense, it considers that “current methods for displaying user interfaces are obsolete”, because complex user interfaces are offered that consume a lot of energy, which is why it has proposed a new format that “reduces the cognitive load of the user and produces a more efficient interface.”
For this reason, it has now devised a kind of underwater interface for its mobile terminals, which will allow users to interact with the electronic device “while they are underwater” in a simpler and faster way.
This is explained in the patent document that has been registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (UPSTO), which shows that the iPhone might detect when it is underwater to offer a simplified version of iOS.
To do this, hide the ‘widgets’ and application shortcuts to gather them in blocks arranged vertically, and introduce the icon of a drop of water in the upper right part of the panel to indicate that the device is underwater.
On the other hand, Apple has shown how the interface of one of these applications or services on the device would be displayed. In this case, the camera, which introduces different icons at the top of the screen, such as activating the flash or the timer, while at the bottom it offers the options ‘Video’, ‘Photo’ and the ‘format’. Square’, for 4:3 photographs.
Apple has indicated in the patent that the submersible interface can be recomposed and returned to its usual state once it determines that the extent of the device that has dried is greater than that which remains wet.
