When the sidewalks turn into an ice rink. If you set foot outside between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, you probably noticed that most surfaces were covered in a thin layer of ice. Blame it on the freezing rains that fell on the region.
Up to three saltings in certain places in the canton
Announced by weather experts, these freezing rains did not surprise the Bridges and Roads teams. In the Mountains and Valleys of Neuchâtel, vehicles circulated from 7 p.m. Tuesday evening to carry out an initial preventive salting. As Dominique Flückiger, head of the maintenance office, explains, “besides that, our entire team was on alert. We started the checks once more at 2:30-3 a.m..” Up to three saltings were carried out in certain sectors, particularly from 700m altitude.
According to the Neuchâtel Police, no accident linked to freezing rain or patches of ice took place during the night. “For us, it’s a satisfaction, in a way it’s our task,” breathes Dominique Flückiger. He also notes that these freezing rains now occur approximately once a year in the canton of Neuchâtel: “It’s different from snow, the problem with freezing rains is that it occurs at 1 or 2 degrees. It can turn around in just a quarter of an hour, we have to be very reactive. » /swe
