The Supreme Court confirms Apple’s victory against Epic Games

The US Supreme Court has rejected claims from Apple and Epic Games in their dispute over App Store rules.

In yet another legal twist, the United States Supreme Court recently ruled on the long-running legal battle between Apple and Epic Games over App Store rules.

By refusing to hear each party’s appeals, the Court maintained the status quo, thereby solidifying Apple’s position in the litigation. Indeed, the Supreme Court was the last resort for Epic Games following losing an appeal earlier this year.

The feud, which began in 2020, came to a head when the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals backed Apple, saying its rules do not violate antitrust laws. Apple won most of the points, except for one related to the “anti-misappropriation” rule.

This rule, which prohibits iOS developers from redirecting users to purchasing methods outside of the App Store, has been the central point of contention. In July 2023, a judge ruled that Apple was not required to change its policies.

The Supreme Court’s current ruling upholds previous verdicts, allowing Apple to maintain the ban on third-party payments while requiring the company to allow developers to inform users regarding other purchasing options.

The ruling might shape the future of App Store rules and similar litigation to come in the tech industry.
