Victoria, a student at the Free University of Brussels, called out the institution on social networks following a transphobic attack experienced last Thursday in the toilets of the Solbosch campus. She denounces in particular a “lack of awareness of the rights of transgender people” on the part of the ULB. Contacted by Belga, the latter said on Tuesday that it wanted to continue to “commit to providing structural responses, adapted to the scale of the University”.
Last week’s altercation is, for the student, “the straw that broke the camel’s back for the multiple transphobic attacks” suffered during her years of study at ULB. She also testifies to frequent cases of misgendering, particularly by members of the teaching staff and management. “At this stage, this shows a cruel lack of awareness internally,” believes the student.
The Free University of Brussels, which says it “has become aware of the facts denounced”, invites the student to a meeting with the authorities of the institution. She recalls that the ULB’s “Equality law clinic” is “specifically active” in defending the rights of transgender people, and that awareness training once morest transphobia is currently planned in the new “Gender and diversity” plan.

Concerning the installation of gender-neutral toilets, “in addition to those in the ULB Sport building and at the Erasme campus library, other places are being studied and a global policy note devoted to inclusive toilets is in progress. preparation,” promises the university.
For her part, Victoria deplores a “disconnect” between management’s stated commitment and the reality experienced by students. It reaffirms the urgency of training students, teachers, security agents and members of management in the dangers of transphobia.
