One day following his victory in the Republican primary in the US state of Iowa, former US President Donald Trump appeared at the start of a defamation trial in New York. In a second trial, columnist and author E. Jean Carroll is demanding ten million dollars (9.1 million euros) in damages from him for statements made in 2019. A judge previously rejected a request from Trump’s lawyers to stay the trial.
This is Carroll’s second lawsuit once morest Trump: In May, the former US president was convicted of sexual abuse and defamation in a first trial. The jury awarded Carroll $5 million in damages. Two weeks following Trump’s conviction, Carroll called for even harsher punishment for the former president in an updated lawsuit following he once more denied Carroll’s rape allegations and insulted her during a live CNN town hall.
The author accused him of raping her in a dressing room at a New York luxury department store in late 1995 or early 1996. In 2019 she went public with the allegations.
The jury found that he sexually abused Carroll but that she did not prove that she was raped by Trump. Given that verdict, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan told prospective jurors that the new trial will only be regarding whether and how much money Trump must pay Carroll for his comments regarding her while he was president in 2019.
Trump wants to testify
Trump appealed the jury’s verdict in May. On social media platforms, he denied the allegations of rape and spoke of the judge’s “absolute hatred” for him. Trump’s defense demanded that the trial not be continued and further announced that Trump wanted to testify. In this case there would be strict limits. Because of the previous verdict, he might not take the stand and claim that he did not sexually abuse or defame Carroll, the judge in charge said.

Carroll also wants to testify. The 80-year-old wants to take the witness stand to report what damage Trump’s public statements have done to her career and reputation.
