Effective Online Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Tinnitus: Study on Chatbot vs Telepsychology

Faced with the challenge of tinnitus, a hearing condition with no definitive solution, a recent study explores the use of a chatbot for online cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This research compares the effectiveness of two innovative treatment methods in 30 adults with tinnitus: a mobile chatbot application and a combination of chatbot with telepsychology sessions.

There is currently no definitive solution for tinnitus, the constant noise in the ears. However, studies have shown that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help manage their effects. However, face-to-face consultations require a large investment on the part of the patient. Authors have considered the use of a conversational agent, or “chatbot”, offering CBT in an interactive manner. This chatbot, acting as a virtual coach, might help patients and relieve their tinnitus. A study was conducted and the results were published in the journal Frontiers in Audiology and Otology.

What are the results of the study?

To evaluate this approach, a study was conducted with 30 adults suffering from tinnitus. Participants were divided into two groups to receive treatment for 8 weeks and were followed for 2 months. The first group used a mobile chatbot application (Tinnibot), while the second combined Tinnibot with telepsychology sessions (teleconsultation with a psychologist).

Several health indicators, such as the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI) and questionnaires on hyperacusis, anxiety and mental health, were assessed before, following treatment, and at follow-up. Results showed significant improvement in both groups, with a trend toward greater improvement in those who received telepsychology.

This study suggests that online CBT may be effective in reducing tinnitus-related distress, as well as levels of anxiety and depression. The addition of telepsychology seems beneficial, but is not essential for the effectiveness of the treatment. The results indicate a significant improvement in symptoms in both groups and thus open new perspectives for the management of tinnitus.
