The gap between rich and poor continues to widen
It is estimated that 148 of the world’s largest companies made a total of $1.8 trillion in profits, a 52% increase from the three-year average.Even if millions of workersinflationFaced with a cost-of-living crisis caused by a reduction in real income levels, shareholders of these large companies can still receive huge dividends.
Amitabh Behar, interim executive director of Oxfam International, said: “This inequality is no accident; the billionaire class is ensuring that corporations provide themselves with greater wealth at the expense of others.”
At the same time, since 2020, the world’s nearly 5 billion people have become poorer. They account for regarding 60% of the world’s total population, but their total actual wealth has decreased by 0.2%.
To address this imbalance, Oxfam urges governments to rein in corporate power through a range of initiatives, including breaking up monopolies,Tax excess profits and wealthand promoting schemes such as employee stock ownership as an alternative to shareholder control.
“Corporate power is used to drive inequality: squeezing workers, making wealthy shareholders even richer, evading taxes and privatizing the country,” the agency noted.
Oxfam’s analysis report also pointed out that companies’ “tax avoidance war“Resulting in the effective corporate tax rate falling by regarding one-third over the past few decades.
“Around the world, private business owners continue to push relentlessly for lower interest rates, increased tax loopholes, reduced transparency and other measures aimed at minimizing the contribution of business to public finances,” the report reads.
