ALGIERS – National consumption of petroleum products reached 18.1 million tonnes in 2023 compared to 17.3 million tonnes consumed in 2022, an increase of 3.5% under the effect of the economic dynamics experienced by the country, indicated the president of the Hydrocarbon Regulatory Authority (ARH), Rachid Nadil.
In a statement to APS, Mr. Nadil specified that “this growth in consumption should continue in the years to come”, ensuring that “national production capacities are capable of satisfying this demand, especially since Algeria has achieved self-sufficiency in petroleum products over the last four years, thanks to the efforts of high authorities, notably through the rehabilitation of refineries and the increase in the production capacity of these products.
In 2022, diesel consumption reached 10.1 million tonnes compared to 9.73 million tonnes in 2022 (+4%). Consumption “expected to increase under the effect of the economic growth experienced by Algeria”, according to the official, who noted that “the production capacity of this product, currently estimated at 9.9 million tonnes, should reach 10.3 million tonnes.
Gasoline consumption, for its part, fell by 0.6%, from 3.34 million tonnes in 2022 to 3.32 million tonnes in 2023, in particular due to the increase in LPG consumption. fuel from 1.55 million tonnes in 2022 to 1.73 million tonnes in 2023 (+12%).
An increase that Mr. Nadil explains by the efforts made by different actors, over several years, to promote this environmentally friendly product offered to the consumer at only 9 dinars/liter.
Kerosene consumption reached 630,000 tonnes in 2023, compared to 470,000 tonnes in 2022 (+34%), while the consumption of marine fuels reached 330,000 tonnes in 2023 compared to 220,000 tonnes in 2022 (+50%).
Butane consumption fell by 6%, from 1.21 million tonnes in 2022 to 1.13 million tonnes in 2023, while propane consumption increased by 1%, reaching 130,000 tonnes compared to 120,000. tonnes in 2022.
Bitumen consumption, on the other hand, fell by 20%, from 620,000 tonnes in 2022 to 500,000 tonnes in 2023.
Concerning investments in the distribution of petroleum products, the manager indicated that the ARH had processed 176 requests for authorization (definitive and temporary) in 2023 for the launch of storage and distribution activities of petroleum products and the creation manufacturing and storage units for lubricants and oil regeneration.
And to specify that 112 authorizations had been granted for the creation of service stations, 6 authorizations for the storage of petroleum products and 2 authorizations for the expansion of the activity of converting vehicles to LPG fuel.
Regarding the creation of lubricant and oil regeneration manufacturing and storage units, 56 authorizations were granted, said Mr. Nadil, noting that these authorizations were granted in accordance with the national plan for the development of lubricant installations. refining and processing of hydrocarbons, the study of which was entrusted to a special sectoral commission.
He recalled, in this regard, that the ARH had launched a digital platform for the study of authorization requests linked to investment in the field of hydrocarbons with a view to facilitating and accelerating the processing of files (two or three days) and to support investors.
- Nadil, moreover, maintained that environmental protection was at the heart of the missions of the Hydrocarbons Regulatory Authority, which ensures, he said, the application of the laws and standards in force in the matter, particularly with regard to the fight once morest pollution.
