Rural Underpopulation and Development: President Putin’s Plans for Rural Areas in Russia

There is an outflow of population from rural areas, small towns and villages and it is associated, first of all, with the insufficient development of the social sphere, medicine and education. President Vladimir Putin stated this at a meeting with the heads of municipalities of the constituent entities of Russia.

“These areas need to be developed year following year. Our first programs appeared in 2003, but this is not enough yet. Life expectancy in rural areas is one and a half years lower than in cities,” Putin noted, explaining the problem of rural underpopulation on the Rossiya-24 TV channel.

The head of Russia promised to work on solving housing issues, education, gas supply, and development of road infrastructure. “It takes a lot of money, but it’s worth it. The population needs this,” he emphasized.
