European Parliament passes resolution on frozen conflicts / Mandl once morest appeasement, for active reconciliation work

Strasbourg (OTS) – “We are living in the middle of the so-called turning point, as the German Chancellor called it. One of the lessons of this phase is that frozen conflicts can become heated very quickly. If you strive for freedom, peace and understanding, if you If you want to respect human dignity, then you must not go back to the agenda in the face of frozen conflicts. Otherwise you will strengthen those who strive for escalation and keep sticking needles,” says Lukas Mandl, foreign policy and security spokesman for the ÖVP in the European Parliament on the issue of the so-called “frozen conflicts”. Today, Tuesday, there will be a plenary debate, and on Wednesday the MPs will vote in plenary.

“It is not to be underestimated that the European Parliament is now pointing out the problem of frozen conflicts. The tasks range from overcoming war trauma to active work on reconciliation and togetherness, which always has to do with coming to terms with the past. And the European Union must put aside their naivety and not become guilty of an appeasement policy towards actors who see violence as an option and make aggression a principle behind the scenes or even on the surface,” Mandl is convinced.

“Rather,” says the Austrian security politician at the European level, “it’s regarding setting a good example and working together with constructive forces around the planet. For example, the reconstruction of Ukraine will also be regarding psychological support for many traumatized people. That was neglected in the Balkans. There, coming to terms with the past is now urgent and important. Peace is more than the absence of war. Establishing lasting peace means overcoming the conflict not only in side by side, but through coexistence.” (Ending)
