A Apple came first in number of smartphone units sold in 2023taking the place that was until then the Samsung. This, it is worth noting, is the first time this has happened since 2010.

Maçã was also, together with Transsion, the only no Top 5 from IDC with a positive annual growth in devices sold, despite the market having registered a drop last year compared to 2022.

It was more than 1.1 billion of units sold in 2023 worldwide. The number represents a decrease in 3,2%according to preliminary data from IDC, and 4%, for Canalyscompared to that recorded in 2022. Apple came in first place, with 234.6 million of iPhones sold, or 20,1% do total — 3,7% more than the 226.3 million of 2022.

Right following Apple comes Samsung, with 226.6 million of units sold, which represents a share of 19,4% in the market. The number, however, is 13,6% lower than that recorded in 2022. In third place was Xiaomicom 145.9 million of smartphones sold, corresponding to 12,5% of the total, with a drop of 4,7% compared to what was seen the previous year.

When looking at the sales figures for just the fourth quarter of last year, the statistics are a little different, including a growth of 8,5% compared to the same period in 2022 (although the top three of the year were in the same positions in the last quarter of 2023).

Com 80.5 million of devices sold, Apple obtained 24,7% participation, registering growth of 11,6% compared to the same period in 2022.

Both research firms highlighted Apple’s resilience, as well as a growing trend towards premium devices thanks to offerings and the positioning of the iPhone 15. As a result, the company was able to reach more consumers.

IDC stated that Apple was the “biggest winner”, as it was able to reach first place among sales, despite the increase in the market for cheaper Android smartphones. The Cupertino giant was also the only one among the three largest manufacturers to have registered annual growth in demand, despite competition and regulatory challenges.

Canalys also recalled that competition from Huawei in China it should be a challenge for Apple to maintain its growth trajectory in the country, and the company must strengthen its ecosystem to do so. The diversification of top-of-the-line Android devices with lower prices, for IDC, in addition to Apple’s growth, was an important factor in Samsung’s fall in the ranking.

Artificial intelligence resources also represent a consumer trend, and should be something to gain traction this year, as well as foldable devices. The expectation for 2024 is that inventory pressure and inflation will decrease, in order to allow manufacturers to focus on innovation and a long-term strategy.
