Often presented as the most fragile link in cinema in France, the film distribution sector in France is holding up, according to the first observatory of film distribution established by the National Cinema Center (CNC). This unprecedented overview, which will be renewed each year, notes “no deterioration” in the post-crisis financial health of French distributors applying for CNC aid.

The observatory looked in particular at 26 independent distributors, for which financial data was available from 2013 to 2022. On this sample, the 2022 turnover, up 18.4% compared to 2021, is only 4.4% lower than the 2017-2019 average. The lower revenues from the theater were partly offset by the increase in TV and video sales. The workforce of these SMEs has increased, to 11 full-time equivalents on average in 2022, compared to 9 in 2017.
