In preparation for the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics, the National Fire Agency is making every effort to make the Games safe, including conducting on-site inspections of competition facilities and accommodations and forming a fire safety support team.

The National Fire Agency announced on the 16th that it will promote fire safety measures such as operating a ‘Fire Safety Support Team’ to successfully host the ‘2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games’.

The Winter Youth Olympics is a large-scale youth international competition held every four years and consists of 7 games and 15 events. About 15,000 people from over 80 countries are expected to participate in the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics, which will be held for 14 days from the 19th to February 1.

The competition will be held at four stadiums in Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do and five stadiums in Pyeongchang, Jeongseon, and Hoengseong, Gangwon-do.

In order to successfully host the Winter Youth Olympic Games and ensure the safety of participating youth, the National Fire Agency has formed a ‘Fire Safety Support Group’ and is discussing and supporting safety measures with related organizations such as central ministries and local governments.

Previously, we produced and distributed customized response manuals for each facility for 13 competition facilities, including competition facilities and lodging, and conducted on-site inspections such as confirmation of risk factors and fire safety education for officials.

The main inspection items are ▲Check the dispatch route, evacuation route and surrounding dangerous facilities for each facility ▲Check the general status of the building, the installation status of firefighting facilities, and the number of facility users ▲Check the severity classification and patient distribution system for multiple casualties in preparation for a major disaster ▲Check the joint response system of related organizations and response training.

In addition, we plan to deploy fire extinguishers, rescue teams, and paramedics throughout the event site until the end of the competition to prepare for casualties and property damage, and to respond quickly through close cooperation with the police in the event of an accident involving large crowds.

The National Fire Agency’s Central 119 Rescue Headquarters operates a quick response team, including the Terrorism Response Rescue Team, and prepares for emergencies by detecting, identifying, collecting, and supporting emergency decontamination of counterterrorism materials.

During the competition period, the Gangwon Fire Department will place all fire departments in the province on special alert and deploy 182 personnel and 49 vehicles per day close to the competition facilities and participant accommodations to prepare for various disasters. In addition, we will strengthen our ability to respond to situations by establishing a three-way call system with interpretation service agencies in preparation for receiving reports from foreigners.

Previously, Nam Hwa-young, head of the National Fire Agency, visited the Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics site on the 12th and conducted a safety inspection of competition facilities, etc. and said, “As the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics is a large-scale youth international competition, we are thoroughly preparing to ensure that it can be held successfully without safety accidents.” “We will respond proactively,” he said, adding, “We will not only dedicate ourselves to the safety of event participants, but also engage in firefighting activities with the safety of our crew as the top priority at all times.”
