Remembering Mahakavi Kumaranashan: The Tragedy of the Redeemer Boat at Pallanayar

It has been 100 years since the boat accident at Pallanayar that killed Mahakavi Kumaranashan. On January 16, 1924, the tragedy of the Redeemer boat took place that lost Mahakavi to Malayalam literature. Kumaranashan, who reached Kollam to go to Aluva, boarded the Redeemer boat which left at 10 pm on January 16.

136 people boarded the boat, which had the capacity to carry only 95 passengers, including those who had returned from Padmanabha Swamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram following performing prayers and some who had gone to attend a wedding in Kottayam. Again the passengers boarded from the road. Some came down.

Kumaranashan was on the second floor of the boat. The accident occurred following the Mahakavi had gone to sleep following discussing the poem ‘Karuna’ which he had with some of his companions at night. The boat overturned while taking a sharp turn at Pallana around 5 am. 24 people died in that accident. Aasan’s body was found following a day. The handwriting of the poem ‘Karuna’ written in pencil was found intact. The cultural center ‘Kumarakodi’ is located on the banks of Pallanayar where Kumaranashan’s body was cremated.

The Redeemer was a Travancore and Cochin Motor Service boat that operated from Kollam to Ernakulam on alternate days. Its owner was Papi Vakiel, a resident of Cherthala.
