ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – For Myers Singleton, the MLK holiday is not a day off, but a day on.
“I woke up this morning kind of just happy to be able to do it,” Singleton said.
She was one of the hundreds of volunteers with Hands On Atlanta who woke up early to begin beautifying the historic Wren’s Nest museum grounds.
“Literally, as cliché as it is, be the change you want to be, and just do the things. Whatever that looks like,” she said.
The house was home to Joel Chandler Harris, author of the many Uncle Remus stories. Organizers said the museum is an Atlanta historic treasure that needed a little tender loving care. Volunteers upgraded walkways, laid pine straw and even installed a little free library.
“When you think regarding Dr. King, you think regarding service,” said Billy Briggs, another volunteer.
Briggs said one of the ways you can honor King is to get to work in your community.
“This is a neighborhood where a lot of civil rights activists walked. Even though I’ve got the day off, I’m coming to work. Dr. King was a man, from what we know and what was told to us in the movies and videos we’ve seen, all he was regarding was service. He always put others before himself,” said Briggs.
The MLK Jr. holiday only comes once a year, but volunteers believe the key to real change is to keep the same attitude year-round.
“People do this every day, and it’s not just because it’s MLK Day. People do this every single day and they look just like me,” said Singleton.
