On the 13th (local time), the British media Daily Mail introduced the story of a 30-year-old man published in the international academic journal Cureus earlier this month. Earlier, the man visited the Sultanahmet Bahiya Hospital in Alor Setar, Malaysia, bleeding profusely from his left eye. He complained of severe pain in his head and eyes, and was blind in his left eye. No injuries were noted other than his eyes, and his vital signs were normal.
After checking the wound and swelling, the medical staff performed an X-ray and CT scan. As a result, it was confirmed that a 3.2cm nail was stuck next to the man’s eye and pierced the orbit (bone surrounding the eyeball). The nail entered the man’s frontal lobe, and bleeding occurred around the area where the nail was inserted. By missing major cerebral arteries and nerves by a few millimeters, fatal injuries including nerve damage were avoided.
The man was immediately administered a tetanus injection, antibiotics, and anti-convulsants. Afterwards, medical staff performed emergency surgery to remove the nail lodged in the brain and treated the fracture and skin wounds. No cerebral hemorrhage occurred following nail removal.
The man who underwent surgery had no life-threatening injuries, but had difficulty closing his eyes or perceiving light. He received five additional days of treatment in the intensive care unit and returned to his hometown following being discharged. The medical staff in charge of the surgery said, “The patient recovered well following the surgery,” and added, “It was extremely fortunate that he did not suffer any nerve damage.”
This man, who worked at a construction site, suffered this accident while trying to remove a nail stuck in a ‘nail gun’ (a tool used to drive nails) while working. He was not wearing protective glasses at the time and was said to have incorrectly activated his equipment while looking directly at the muzzle of his gun. Medical staff said, “Employers must provide workers with appropriate personal protective equipment to prevent work-related injuries,” and “There is also a need to educate and demonstrate workers how to use equipment safely.”
