Life is not a long, quiet river for the future Lancia Ypsilon. After the first prototype recovered from a river, not far from the Stellantis industrial site in Montbéliard following a trip off the road, the chic Italian city car is once once more making headlines outside of official timing.

The brand’s managers had initially expected a presentation next February. But apparently well-informed paparazzi, unless it was an organized escape, spotted her in the middle of filming an film. The Lancia Ypsilon makes its first “almost” official appearance.

This time, the Ypsilon is much more to its advantage there than out of the water, where it occupied the news section of the regional daily press. Its midnight blue livery is very rewarding even if from certain angles it remains difficult not to see the Peugeot 208 or even the Opel Corsa which serve as its matrix. The roof spoiler, the exterior mirrors, the hood cutout on the wings and all of the glazing give it an air of déjà vu.

However, the designers under the leadership of Frédéric Duvernier (ex Citroën) and Jean-Pierre Ploué (who oversees the style of all of Stellantis’ European brands) have grafted beautiful ends to it which in no way lack originality. The connection with the Pu+Ra HPE concept is obvious, which allows the brand to tell a beautiful story subtly inspired by its past. While on board, the atmosphere promises to be particularly chic.

The technical underside of the car will remain unsurprising with, in essence, a 48V type mild hybridization associated with the 136 hp 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder engine and, in electric, a 156 hp variant. Will Lancia offer, in order to lower the entry ticket, a 100 hp petrol version? Undoubtedly yes, for the Italian market, where it remains very popular. To be continued.

On the other hand, the brand’s boss, Luca Napolitano, has already announced, for 2025, a cutting-edge version called Lancia Ypsilon HF, 100% electric which will have a power of 240 hp and a sharp chassis.

Engine and technologies just confirmed under the hood of the future Abarth 600 and which will also be used in the Alfa Romeo Milano SUV. A boosted Ypsilon essential for the image and making it credible in the sphere of small chic where the Mini and the Audi A1 Sportback are battling. The English car, which is now betting on electric, is available in Cooper E version with 184 hp and Cooper SE which produces 218 hp.

With 156 and 240 hp respectively, the electric Ypsilons will not be disoriented. Without forgetting that with such cavalry under the hood, the Lancia Ypsilon HF will be able to hold its own once morest the Alpine A290. And for their part, the wiser wattage variations of the Italian will thwart the plans of the Renault 5.
