In the coming week the weather will present itself from its changeable side. From snowfall to sunshine to foehn, ice and fog, everything is there.

The weather remains wintry – with a short break. This is what Geosphere predicted in a preview of the new week.

Regional snowfall possible on Monday

According to this, clouds will predominate on Monday on the northern side of the Alps as far as western Lower Austria, regionally it will snow lightly or infrequently, otherwise it will mostly stay dry and the sun will always shine. Local areas of fog or high fog in the south usually clear soon.

In the late followingnoon and evening there may also be some local snow on the northern border in Upper and Lower Austria. The wind blows moderately to briskly from the west north of the main Alpine ridge, while in the south it remains rather light. The early temperatures are minus eight to zero degrees, the daily maximum temperatures are minus one to plus five degrees.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny

On Tuesday there will be even stronger cloud fields, especially in Upper and Lower Austria as well as in the Mariazeller Land, and there will be light or heavy snow in some places. During the day it will be dry everywhere and at times, sometimes even predominantly sunny. The wind blows weak to moderately, in the north and east also briskly from the west. In the morning it will be minus nine to zero degrees, the daily maximum temperatures will reach minus one to plus five degrees.

Warning of risk of slippery conditions on Wednesday

The eastern Alpine region continues to be in a westerly flow on Wednesday. Embedded in this, a warm front ensures a temporary exchange of air masses in large parts of the country. During the day there will be heavy cloud cover in the west, in the very north and in the evening also in the south. Locally, stubborn cold air lakes persist in valleys and depressions, where there is a risk of slippery conditions when there is precipitation. The snow line temporarily rises to over 1,000 meters during the day. The wind is blowing weak to moderate, increasingly brisk on the eastern edge of the Alps from east to south. The early temperatures are expected to be minus twelve to minus four degrees, and the maximum daily temperatures are zero to plus six degrees.

Cold front reaches Austria on Thursday

A low pressure center moving quickly eastward lies over Poland at midday on Thursday and brings a noticeable change in air masses in the eastern Alpine region with a noticeable cold front in the second half of the day. With dense cloud cover, rain and sleet will begin in the west and north in the morning, and as a result the snow line will also drop quickly in valley areas. The southern side of the Alps remains free of precipitation during the day. As disturbances pass through, the westerly wind picks up from strong to stormy and causes a temporary significant increase in temperature in the remaining cold air lakes. Early temperatures between minus six and plus two degrees are followed by daily maximum temperatures of two to nine degrees.

Wintry start to the weekend

The significant change in air masses took place on Friday, and the eastern Alpine region entered a cold, northwesterly flow under increasing high pressure. Initially, remnants of the cold front with a few snowflakes can still be found in the southeast. Overall, the clouds are clearing up, but in the north and in the northern storage areas east of Tennengau it remains densely cloudy with short snow showers. In addition, strong to stormy westerly winds blow in the north and on the peaks, with early temperatures of minus eight to minus one degrees and daily maximum temperatures of minus three to plus three degrees, depending on the wind.
