The La Cage restaurant chain – formerly called La Cage aux Sports – is currently trying to conquer Europe.
A first branch opened in Bordeaux, France, last June, which will soon be accompanied by a second restaurant.
However, other European countries might soon discover our sports breweries.
“We have always had requests, which mainly came from France, to export the concept of La Cage, and five years ago, there was a serious group with whom we had discussions,” explains in an interview at TVA Nouvelles Jean Bédard, president and CEO of Cage Brasserie Sportive.

The managers of La Cage thus agreed to conduct a test in Bordeaux by opening one or two restaurants, since a concept like that does not exist in France, where sports bars are more like pubs, with smaller televisions. .
Unexpectedly, the experiment carried out in Bordeaux seems to have piqued the interest of other countries.
“We had people from Portugal who came to meet us in December, very serious people. We also have people for England, who are serious too,” explains Mr. Bédard.

“There is really a craze for this type of restaurant, and Europeans, especially young people, are very open to everything that comes from North America,” he adds.
Mr. Bédard also thinks that the Quebec origin of the restaurant chain also plays to its advantage. Quebec is also in the spotlight in the French branches.
“We decided that with the French group, they want that as with us, and even their wish is that the traditional friendly service of Quebecers, we be able to export it to France,” mentions the president.
The menu is almost identical to that of the Quebec branches. The French also adopt Quebec’s ways of eating during a meal. While wine is generally preferred in France to beer, Bordeaux restaurant customers opt for beer in proportions similar to what we observe in Quebec.
“So people, when they go to La Cage, they go there to have a beer and then have a little bit of the same experience. It’s fascinating and that’s also why we’re encouraged for the future,” enthuses Mr. Bédard.
