A landslide on the road that connects Quibdó with Medellín buried more than 50 people who were sheltering inside a house on the road, while the passage was being enabled that was blocked by other landslides that did not allow them to return or continue. The house where the people on the road stayed was that of Rocío Mazo, a 70-year-old woman, who was well-known in the region.

On the followingnoon of January 12, shortly before the emergency occurred, Rocío spoke with her niece Luz Stella Mazo, to whom she pointed out that there were many people in the house. “I’m already out of the food I had, I’m going to see if I can make more because there are a lot of people,” Rocío told Stella, who told Noticias Caracol that that day the woman was at the house with her husband Alberto Olaya, and his daughter Milena Olaya, 40, who lived in Medellín, but was visiting for the end of the year celebrations.
Stella learned that she made rice and eggs for the people who were arriving, she mentioned that she had bread and papadas and that she even made some bananas because of the number of people there were in the place. “There was food for everyone, for everyone who arrived. “She was happy with that.”

At one point the communication stopped because there was a noise, a first landslide caused dirt to fall at the entrance to the house, but according to Stella, her aunt did not want to go out because she did not believe that the mountain might fall on top of her.

Thank you for her collaborative spirit and thank you for her calls,” Elizabeth Cardona highlighted regarding who “Professor Rocio” was, whom she describes as a collaborative person, with great teachings and someone to imitate.
The search has focused on the bodies. Since the morning of Saturday, January 13, the family has been in the area waiting for news. Rocío Mazo is on the list of the first 17 fatal victims who were identified and transferred to Legal Medicine in Medellín. They still need to find her husband and her daughter, who would have been buried in the deepest part of the landslide.
So far, 33 dead people have been found in the area of the tragedy and 20 injured people have been transferred to different healthcare centers in Carmen de Atrato and Antioquia. There are more than 200 members of rescue forces in the area who have been present in the area such as the National Risk Management Unit, Civil Defense and firefighters from different municipalities, waiting to rescue all the victims of the emergency.
