“I haven’t been able to play 464,517 hours”, he’s been playing an FPS for 53 years, except that it seems to be a problem linked to his PS5…

When we love, we don’t count, and this is even more true for our favorites – games on which we can spend very long hours without seeing the time pass. But this player probably broke all records. When he looked at his playing time on one of his FPS games, the number left him speechless.

53 years of play

A player wanted to check the number of hours he had spent on the FPS DOOM Eternal, and his surprise was total since the figure displayed was 464,517 hours, or just over 53 years. A shame when we know that the game was only released in 2020.

“There’s a mistake, right? I haven’t played this game that much.” he said on Reddit. And obviously, this is indeed an error that can be found by digging into the bowels of the PlayStation 5. Apparently, the problem comes from the Unix system. This operating system appeared at the beginning of the 70s and gave birth to BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution), another system whose code is found today in the PS5 or Xbox Series, and is used to measure the passage of time .

Except that it can sometimes act up, and measure time incorrectly, and in both directions (it can also display a lower figure than reality). The good news, is that it is easily adjusted during system updates.

The very amused community

If in the end, this discovery will have disconcerted our player, it will have above all amused the community, who was quick to draw the parallel between the astronomical number of hours of play and his level.

  • “My God, over 400,000 hours and still no platinum”
  • “It shouldn’t take this long to get platinum, it’s an abuse of ID Software”

But the funniest comment comes from MADMACmk1: “Time flows differently in hell”. An absolutely acceptable explanation.
