the essentials The Occitan circle Peire Lagarda de Foix has released his almanac Occitan version. It will be presented to the public on January 19, at Léo. The opportunity to raise awareness of this association which keeps the Romance language alive.

The bible for practitioners of the Occitan language is finally out! The 2024 alman’oc is now available at the Surre bookstore and from the Occitan circle of Foix called Peire Lagarda, who designs it. It is rich in tales, poems, recipes, games… written in Occitan, and translated into French on the other page.

All styles

A collection that we owe to many people who love the Romance language, residing in the territory of Ariège. Every year, Danielle Piquemal, member of the Fuxéenne association, has the difficult task of recovering all the texts considered by those who master the Occitan language. “Anyone can participate if you know her,” she says. Many contributors come from Ariège Occitan circles, others master the language on a daily basis and were contacted.

All styles are allowed, there is everything like a recipe for quinoa with vegetables and fresh goat’s cheese, the story of a group of singers, a tribute to a personality, a touching story linking a dog to his master, a text on behavior… And these writings are renewed every year.

They are corrected by Annie Wolf, president of the Institute of Occitan Studies which brings together all Occitan circles, then formatted by Danielle Piquemal. A job that takes them several months, and of which they have reason to be proud. Especially since nothing is left to chance: “The photo on the cover is an old door on rue du Rival, in Foix,” points out the lady.

“Restart an old habit”

This is at least the tenth edition. “Almanacs are very old. Before, they existed in patois. People took them to find out what was happening in the countryside, they found information and . And then, it fell into disuse. disuse, the habit was lost. So, we decided to relaunch this book,” says Danielle Piquemal. Obviously, it will be in an Occitan version.

The 2024 alman’oc still offers a French and Occitan version. MHD

The work will be presented on January 19, at Léo de Foix, at 6 p.m. The opportunity to make the local circle known, which only has 16 people. But generational renewal seems assured because people aged 30 to 45 are part of the workforce. “It’s good. There are people who have moved to Foix and who have registered. They are starting from scratch but are enjoying it. We have put them in the swing of things,” rejoices the member.

Occitan lessons are given every Tuesday, at 5 p.m., at Léo, by a teacher. “The goal is to bring the language to life. We learn to speak it and write it. The teacher explains how the words are written, how it is pronounced. Occitan is a little music. But “sometimes it’s difficult to translate, because the expression doesn’t really exist in French, we can’t quite find the same meaning,” she describes.

The association accepts new members even if the year has already started. There is therefore always time to discover another language and find out more from the association.

Meetings throughout the year

Being part of the Occitan circle is not just regarding attending classes. Members can participate in the dictade, the Occitan dictation, which takes place on January 28, at 2 p.m., at the Foix sociocultural center. The dictation, a national event, is suitable for three levels of Occitan, including beginners. Then, a show accompanied by a snack is organized. The whole is open to the general public.

On February 9, a musical show will be held in the Sandy Room, of the sociocultural center, at 9 p.m. Visitors will be able to listen to Occitan and French musical tales, performed by two musicians.

Finally, the members of the Occitan circle will visit the lair of the distiller, Pierre Rouch, in Alzen. They will be able to discover the museum and the musical instruments that the luthier, who makes oboes and Gascony bagpipes, created. The ride is planned for April, “on the last day it boils.”
