The woman was used to sharing the hallways of her home with travelers who traveled along the trail of death, as the road that connects Chocó with central Colombia is commonly known. Friday was no exception. With open arms and plates of rice and eggs, she welcomed the citizens trapped in the landslides.
The clock struck 3:13 pm when he communicated via WhatsApp with his niece, a merchant from the municipality of El Carmen de Atrato, explaining that the mountain in front of his house was collapsing: “There was a small landslide that didn’t even happen. the road,” he said. An hour later, both had a dialogue. Rocío told him that she had a house full of people who were stranded by the landslides: “People had no way to move. They stayed there and she made food for all the people, she also said that she was running out of the market.” The conversation was interrupted by a scream.
With watery eyes, Luz Estella Rueda remembered her aunt’s words: “A landslide, a landslide. Yes, there was a landslide that reached the platform.” She suggested that she leave the home immediately and received a “no” in response: “Where to? Am I going to go to the street?” I am safe in my house,” Mazo said.
There are few explanations and theories regarding the emergency that causes sadness throughout Colombia. Luz Estella Rueda finds it difficult to understand the arguments of experts and leaves her clarifications in ellipses: “That mountain was not enough for such a great tragedy to occur, it was very small. What happened? I do not understad I do not understand”.

Rocío Mazo was found dead several meters from her home on January 13, which she carefully decorated over the last 24 months. The collapse also took her life partner, Alberto Olaya, and her 44-year-old daughter, Milena Olaya, who traveled from the city of Medellín to share the first days of the year with her parents (she left three children).
The bodies of the latter have not been recovered. The critical conditions of the terrain plus the heavy rainfall in the last few hours have made it difficult to track down the victims; More than 200 public officials and relief organizations from the departments of Antioquia and Chocó participate in the maneuvers.
