Three Elephants Pass: Spectacular Street Theater in Santiago

2024-01-14 00:53:42

As if a toy cabinet had been completely emptied, three giant elephants, two or three columns of lead soldiers-musicians, a flock of metallic birds and a group of pipers accompanied “Three elephants pass…”.

From the front of the La Moneda Palace, the column turned through Agustinas to Santa Lucía, to park with the first shadows next to the Museum of Fine Arts.

A journey of more than an hour that stimulated the sound dialogue with the human tide that made this festive and cathartic rite their own, begun in broad daylight.

Each of these characters, with well-defined costumes and makeup, responded to the rhythm of sounds that incited them to the intense and expressive gesture that was frozen or animated according to the beat of an invisible orchestra conductor.

“We are happy that culture massively occupies the streets of the city” was the recurring comment from the public in reference to a work that demonstrated how poetic, playful, spectacular and exotic street theater can be.
