The second legs of the semi-finals of the Austrian championship in the Alps Hockey League were not for the faint of heart. However, the Salzburg teams forced a repeat of the final from the previous year.
The Austrian championship of the Alps Hockey League once once more goes to a Salzburg team. The Zeller Eisbären can defend their title from last year and will meet the Red Bull Juniors once more in the final, who are certainly eager for revenge. In 2023, the Young Bulls lost 4-0 at home following a 3-0 away win and thus lost the title.
Red Bull Juniors had to go into extra time
There was almost a bit of a repeat in the second leg of the semi-final duel on Saturday. The Juniors lost 2-0 to Bregenzerwald following the 5-3 first leg win, but decided the duel with a 1-2 goal in extra time. The game started at a high pace, Bregenzerwald took the lead in the first third. The second third remained goalless. It was only in the final period that Bregenzerwald managed to make it 2-0, which equalized the overall score to 5-5. In the subsequent 3-on-3 extra time, Vasily Zelenov finally scored to ensure the Red Bull Hockey Juniors reached the final.
The winning goal scorer said: “It was a difficult game today, Bregenzerwald played really well and showed great effort. I’m happy that we made it to the final, even though we lost the game today. We relied on a quick transition game focused and tried to take shots from the blue line. The game gave us a lot of motivation and joy. We would like to take that with us into the final.”
Zeller Eisbären won the penalty shootout
Zell am See is waiting there. After the 4-4 draw from the first game on Thursday, their rivals Lustenau took an early 1-0 lead through Lukas Haberl (4th) in the second leg in Pinzgau in front of more than 200 spectators. In the second third, the Eisbären turned the match around: Nicklas Huard in the majority (21st) and Fabio Artner (27th) made it 2-1 for the hosts. But the Lustenau team hit back in a power play, Valtteri Kukkola scored to make it 2-2 (37th).
The two teams then fought an exciting duel in which neither gave in. So following the 2:2 following 60 minutes and the overall score of 6:6, extra time was necessary for the decision. But there too, both teams failed to score the decisive goal and it went into a showdown called a penalty shootout. There Nicklas Huard scored the decisive penalty, the Zeller Eisbären won 3:2 and advanced to the final with an overall score of 7:6.
