The governor of La Rioja, Ricardo Quintela, called for extraordinary sessions in the local Legislature with the objective of dealing with the creation of its own currency for the province. The Peronist leader assured that he needs more money to prevent people from “starving to death.”
“Today I called extraordinary sessions and sent a bill to give me financial instruments, whether virtual or physical, to be able to use, if necessary, in the face of the abandonment of the Nation with the province of La Rioja“, assured the Cordilleran president in statements to Radio 10.
The governor recalled that the province of La Rioja had to issue its own currency when the former president Carlos Menem He was governor of that district and also in 2001. “With that, part of the salaries was paid until the situation normalized,” he explained.
“The currency works with a percentage in cash and a percentage in bonds. These bonds are received by the province for the payment of services, taxes and fees. As for commerce, You must agree with the Chamber of Commerce to receive this currency as a form of payment“he clarified.

According to Quintela, the situation of the Riojans is “desperate” and he stated that he does not want people to “die of hunger” in the province. “If before we didn’t make ends meet, Today they do not reach the end of the first week following payment. The governor said that the crisis worsened following President Javier Milei took office and decided to extend last year’s Budget, which caused annual inflation to liquefy provincial funds.
On the other hand, he confirmed that La Rioja reached an agreement for “salary recomposition” with the local police. “I told them the situation we are going through (in the province) and they understood it. They apologized and we agreed to a salary recomposition in two payments because we do not have resources,” he declared.
This agreement with the Security Forces implies an increase in two tranches. “We have no resources. We pay the salary recomposition in two parts. 70 percent when appropriate and 30 percent in the middle of the month. It was a way to fix” , he stated.
