William Lai Ching Teh, the presidential candidate of the ruling party and pro-American party, Democratic Progressive Party, won the election in Taiwan. William Lai was defeated by the KMT’s Ho Yi, who had good ties with China.
William Lain’s victory was the first in Taiwan’s history to win five million votes. Presidential candidate Ho Ye received 4.66 million votes, while Taiwan People’s Party’s (TPP) Ko Wen Jie received 3.68 million votes.
With the victory of William Lain, the crisis in the region will become more acute. Calling it an election between war and peace, China has accused Lai of threatening peace in the region if he wins.
China has stated to the US that Taiwan is part of them and will not compromise on the issue. Beijing has upheld the ‘One China’ policy, which includes Taiwan, in military talks between the two countries.
