In Guebwiller, since the end of December 2023, the manager of the Le Florival cinema signs a petition once morest the disappearance of parking spaces, in front of its 5 theaters. The city wants to build in the area, on the Carto-Rhin wasteland, 3 buildings with 35 housing units and commercial space on the ground floorwhich would, according to the manager, cause the disappearance of plenty of parking spaces.

Fear that those who come to the cinema will go elsewhere

“There will remain the parking lot which is between the town hall and us and the city tells us that there will remain 450 spaces within a radius of 300 meters, including the Crédit Mutuel parking lot, Place de Liberté etc. But in the evening, these parking lots are largely occupied by residents,” insists Claude Brasseur, the manager of the Le Florival cinema.

Even if this is not the chronicle of a death foretold, these removals of parking spaces will be a serious handicap for the cinema, but for the city too,” adds Claude Brasseur. Many people come to the cinema from Guebwiller from the potassium basin, from Rouffach, from Merxheim too. There attendance at the five theaters is also up 19%, as at the national level.

450 parking spaces within a radius of 300 meters, according to Guebwiller town hall

For its part, the town hall is taking on this project of 3 buildings and 35 housing units, for the development of the city.

“In this case, the manager did not give us exactly his parking needs. We have always supported the cinema. Today, he cites a need for 140 places. I specify that within a radius of 300 meters, we have 450 parking spaces. Well identified sites close to the cinema. So we far exceed the needs of the cinema and I don’t see where we can eliminate parking spaces,” replies the mayor of Guebwiller, Francis Kleitz.

A legal battle is already underway, as well as an online and paper petition. It was launched in December 2023, with more than 1,800 signatures on the internet and more than a thousand signatures on paper.
