A large police force raided a pharmacy in the Wiener Neustadt district on Friday, the daily newspaper “Kurier” reported (Saturday edition). There is suspicion of trafficking in addictive substances, a spokeswoman for the Vienna State Police Directorate confirmed to the APA. Accordingly, suspected evidence was seized and an arrest was made. Due to the ongoing investigation, further details will not be announced until next week.

According to “Kurier”, the case began in Vienna when a dealer was arrested there last year with “almost 40 times the amount of the drug substitutes” that addicts receive in pharmacies as part of the substitution program. According to spokeswoman Julia Schick, the Vienna State Criminal Police Office is conducting the surveys, and the Federal Criminal Police Office is also involved. According to the newspaper, the financial police and sniffer dogs were also on duty.

The distribution of methadone and other substitute opiates to addicts is subject to strict regulations: opiate addicts are only allowed to take the drugs in pharmacies under supervision. This is to prevent the tablets from ending up on the black market. The owner of the pharmacy is also suspected of having illegally sold anabolic steroids and psychotropic substances such as sleeping pills and sedatives, according to the “Kurier”.
