“Paolo Nutini” was in the gasometer – with a few songs and a beautiful light show!
Admittedly, I didn’t have too high expectations for that concert evening. I only knew the main protagonist “Paolo Nutini” by name, but had never actively heard him. My partner, on the other hand, was very enthusiastic regarding his music a long time ago and so we decided to make a pilgrimage to the Gasometer. to refresh his memory and get an idea of what I had missed all these years.
Before we started with “paolo nutini” we got to enjoy the opening act “brockhoff” from Hamburg. I really had no expectations and thought I would be bored with the performance. But when the first bars reached my ears and one catchy melody following another reached me, my head was rattling. why was this opening act suddenly so good? why didn’t I have that on my radar?
I was really surprised that I got to hear really nice indie songs. I think there were even one or two bangers there, at least my various cell phone videos sounded a lot like super hits. In any case, Brockhoff managed to inspire me and at the same time motivate me for the rest of the evening – thank you!
completely excited (thanks brockhoff) I was now ready for “Paolo Nutini“. I was now sure that he would put on an incredibly good show and wanted to be as far up front as possible so that I might finally see this forgotten indie star live. When he entered the stage in his slightly boring outfit and with his shaggy mane and presented his first few songs, it was a bit like looking forward to a hot band and then only cold water comes out of the tap. yes, that’s exactly how I felt when I heard Paolo Nutini sing for the first time.
All the songs sounded like run-of-the-mill boomer radio songs, lukewarm and not particularly exciting. But I didn’t want to show my disappointment and tried to get involved somehow and nod my head along. But the first half of the concert was really tiring to endure. at least for me. Everyone else around me seemed impressed and I mightn’t quite understand it.
After the very intense “through the echoes” things finally got a little wilder. The guitar was louder, the drums were more driving and I had a bit of hope once more. I also hope for little bangers, for hits that would revise my already formed opinion. but nothing came of it. I found out for myself that it might not be the music but rather his voice in particular that bored me so much.
While I was still thinking regarding what I liked and didn’t like regarding “Paolo Nutini,” he sang a cover. namely his interpretation of “stuck in the middle of you”. The song fit Nutini surprisingly well, the song really got things moving. But at the same time I thought: what does that say regarding me if I chose a cover song as the best number of the whole evening? and: what does that say regarding nutini?
When we delved back into his own musical work, it became clear to me once more: his music was somehow too simple for me, I lacked musical finesse. yes, and sometimes I was just fixated on the light show. I thought the light was really beautiful. But the songs were boring, so I started wandering around, hoping that I would be more interested in another place in the gasometer.
The search for emotion was of course in vain. At some point I was back in my old place, at my starting point next to my partner. And that at exactly the right moment: because at the very end, Paolo Nutini walked along the front row to sing to the people from a distance of 10 centimeters. I thought that was very nice of him, it finally humanized a bit! late, but still!
Finally, I can only say: it was a very average concert. Maybe I listened to too much Ö3 in my childhood and can simply no longer hear the hits from the last few decades, including their vocal colors. Since Paolo Nutini sounded exactly like the radio voices of the time, there may be something to the theory. Anyway, nice anyway, but not for me. I need more attitude from him, more hits, whether by himself or covered. yes, it wasn’t enough for me. But who knows, maybe he’s writing a mega hit and at the next concert I’ll change my mind completely. we will see. This time you didn’t miss anything by being away.
