After just two extremely strong albums they quit Casey They said goodbye at the end of 2018 and from then on concentrated on other bands. But this farewell didn’t last long for the Welsh and they played their first concerts once more a year ago. But not only that, fortunately there was also time for new music. „How To Disappear“ is dedicated to a kind of in-between world surrounding grief and existence, as enigmatic as it is fascinating. Musically they grew a lot from this opportunity.
Of all things, the title song, which comes at the very end, sums up the quintet’s new, old self-confidence. Post-hardcore, shoegaze, post rock and various other alternative ideas come together in “How To Disappear”. Buttery-soft vocals, elegiac soundscapes and oppressive fanfares with wonderfully washed-out harshness form a skilful symbiosis. It gets loud, but not too loud to linger on this supposed existential interface. If you want a more powerful Casey back, you’ll find what you’re looking for in “Puncture Wounds To Heaven,” which rushes to a furious, almost foaming climax and likes to grip a little tighter.
However, the best moments of this record lurk in the epic depth, as “Sanctimonious” impressively demonstrates. A veritable flood of emotions erupts in the chorus, which seemingly can’t stop growing, its various post-variations producing a bubbling tapestry of melodies. “Those That I’m Survived By” is also spectacular, a bit quieter and more fragile, but hints at emo and post-hardcore at just the right moment. The play with heaviness and melody is incredibly good, even individual screams work their way to the foreground and provide pure catharsis.
It was obviously good for Casey to have largely disappeared from the scene for a few years, because now they are back with new vigor and impressive depth. “How To Disappear” doesn’t shy away from continuing to focus on heavier sounds, but that’s no longer a must. The Welsh really enjoy playing with loud-soft dynamics, with tapestries of sound that unfurl in stages, with raw emotions. Here you can see new little highlights with every run, framed by really good songs. How good to have Casey back in this form.
