Munich. Three years ago, Rosemarie unexpectedly contracted shingles. What initially seemed harmless quickly developed into a widespread rash on the entire right side of the face with severe pain. In the video interview, Rosemarie talks regarding her illness and the pain she still suffers from today.

Rosemarie was traveling with a friend when she felt an unpleasant pain in her face. Over the course of the day, the pain increased so much that she went to the hospital. Thanks to a quick diagnosis, she was able to be treated immediately with medication, but these had no effect. The entire right side of her face was covered in open spots, red pustules and blisters caused by shingles. Rosemarie describes the pain as stabbing, throbbing and burning, sometimes accompanied by itching. During the weeks she spent in the hospital, nothing helped. The examinations, diagnoses and treatments presented the pensioner with a major stress test and a real medical marathon. Today, three years following the onset of the disease, the visible symptoms have healed, but the severe pain remains. Without daily medication it would be unbearable for her. It is not always easy for her to accept that she will remain a pain patient for the rest of her life. “In retrospect, I wish I had known more regarding shingles, regarding the real disease,” she admits in the video. Nevertheless, Rosemarie, supported by her husband, tries to maintain a positive attitude to life and wants to use her story to make others aware of the condition shingles.

Keep an eye on shingles prevention

One in three adults will develop shingles in the course of their life, which is caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus as a result of a weakening of the immune system. This is not – as is often assumed – a harmless itchy rash, but rather a disease of the nerves that can cause very severe pain. In up to 30% of those affected, this pain lasts for weeks, months or even years even following the external symptoms have healed; it is then referred to as post-herpetic neuralgia. In order to minimize the personal risk of illness, all people in Germany aged 60 and over are entitled to a preventive vaccination once morest shingles. The health insurance companies cover the costs for this. For people with an underlying disease, vaccination is recommended from the age of 50.
